Understanding Gum Disease: Signs, Stages, and Prevention

Gum disease is one of the most common dental problems we see — and one of the most preventable. The tricky part is that in its early stages it often causes no pain, so it can quietly progress. Knowing the signs makes all the difference.

What causes it

Gum disease starts with plaque — the sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth. When plaque isn't removed by regular brushing, flossing, and cleanings, it hardens into tartar and irritates the gums. Over time, that irritation can turn into infection and damage.

The early stage: gingivitis

Gingivitis is the mild, early form of gum disease, and the good news is that it's usually reversible. Watch for:

  • Gums that are red, swollen, or tender
  • Bleeding when you brush or floss
  • Persistent bad breath

At this stage, a professional cleaning plus improved home care can often restore your gums to health. This is exactly why we don't want you to ignore "a little bleeding."

The advanced stage: periodontitis

If gingivitis isn't addressed, it can progress to periodontitis. Here the infection begins to affect the bone and tissue that support your teeth. Signs include:

  • Gums pulling away from the teeth
  • Teeth that feel loose or shift
  • Pus or a persistent bad taste
  • Changes in how your teeth fit together

Periodontitis can't be fully reversed, but it can be managed and stabilized with the right treatment — the earlier, the better.

How to prevent it

The fundamentals are simple and genuinely effective:

  • Brush twice a day and floss daily to remove plaque before it hardens
  • Keep up with professional cleanings — they remove tartar you can't
  • Don't smoke; it significantly raises your risk
  • Come in early if you notice bleeding or tender gums

Why it matters beyond your mouth

Healthy gums are part of your overall health. Research has linked gum disease to conditions elsewhere in the body, which is one more reason not to brush it off.

If your gums bleed, feel tender, or you simply can't remember your last cleaning, that's your cue. Caught early, gum disease is very manageable — and often reversible. We're glad to take a look and get you on the right track.
